Writings and Art on the Origins of the Cosmos
A look into the origins of life itself and ourselves, both as a species and as individuals. Where do we come from?
Memoir
Among the question "Where do we come from?", we also were asked "How do borders/barriers (physical/symbolic) affect our lives?" We wrote about a time in our life that affected who we became today, and how it relates to those two essential questions. I wrote about a rough time in my life, a time in my life that was full of doubt, seclusion, and loneliness. Of course, I am nothing like I was in the past, this is merely a window into the events that made me who I am today.
Origin Story
A Gift of Presence is a story that revolves around the topic of the age of the Earth. These stories are influenced by writers such as Italo Calvino, who is known for his origins stories about the dinosaurs, the moon, and many others. This story is about a great star, one that had newly formed in the infinite blackness of space. The story stays with the star as it gazes upon the universe, and its longing for one small and simple desire; that of having company.
Papercuttings
After finishing our origins stories, we were able to select three specific scenes from the story and make them come to life with an artstyle called papercutting. My three images followed a more tribal pattern than the designs the rest of the class thought of. They all consist of two layers; the first being a white paper that has been cut out in specific places to show the image. The second layer is a plain sheet of black paper to fill the gaps in the white paper.
The first image is called Chaotic Brilliance, as the image is depicting a blazing star, which shines with a chaotic ferocity. The second image is Serenity. It depicts a planet with smoother lines and an image of what it would become. The final is named Everlasting Hope, as the final planets come together and lay down the final peices of the puzzle that frees the star from a vast loneliness.

This image represents the blazing star which is the main character in my origin story. The black areas are areas where the white paper has been cut, and filled with a black background.

This image is coming soon, and will be updated once available.

This papercutting is the final scene in my story, where all the planets of the Solar System have finally finished their formation.

Reflection
During this project, I learned a lot about the world around us, and the way it can be perceived. Above all, though, was that nobody perceives the world we live in the exact same way. Some people are influenced by their beliefs, others the science behind everything they see. Or some people just don't care and just do whatever they please. Those who see the world through different eyes have evidence that will support them, and so do the others. We cannot say that our way is the "correct" way of veiwing the world, or that our way is the "proper" way. Everything is constanty changing, and so is the way we see things. There is no correct way to turn, you must make the choices for yourself, even if the math or reasoning behind it might not always make sense.
